Between Sierpe and the ocean, the Térraba and Sierpe rivers form a huge maze of channels and mangroves. It is one of the richest ecosystems in the region and a perfect half-day trip for families or before heading to Caño Island.
Wildlife you can see
The Térraba-Sierpe wetland
The Térraba-Sierpe National Wetland protects the largest mangrove forest in Costa Rica, listed as a wetland of international importance (Ramsar). Its tangled roots are a nursery for fish and crustaceans and a refuge for wildlife.
What wildlife will you see?

- 🪶 herons, egrets, kingfishers and raptors,
- 🦎 iguanas and basilisks, sometimes snakes in the branches.

Boat or kayak?
By boat from Sierpe: a relaxed 3-hour ride with a guide explaining everything. Ideal for families and photographers.
By kayak from Coronado (10 minutes from Ojochal): you paddle a double kayak with a local Boruca guide, in silence. More immersive, away from the crowds.
Tips
- Go in the morning: animals are more active and it is cooler.
- Bug spray, hat and sunscreen are a must.
- Binoculars and a camera with a zoom make a big difference.
- Sierpe is also where boats leave for Drake Bay: easy to combine with your travel day.
