Off the Osa Peninsula, Caño Island is one of the best snorkeling and diving spots in Costa Rica. Sea turtles, reef sharks, rays and huge schools of fish: here is how to make the most of this protected marine reserve.
Wildlife you can see
A protected biological reserve
Caño Island has been a biological reserve since 1978. It sits about 15 km (9 miles) off Drake Bay. To protect it, the number of visitors is capped every day and landing is limited to a small beach by the ranger station.
The island is also home to pre-Columbian stone spheres, left by the people who lived here long before the Spanish arrived.
How to get to Caño Island
By boat only, with a licensed operator. Tours leave from Drake Bay, the Sierpe River, Uvita or Dominical. Expect 45 minutes to 1.5 hours each way depending on where you start and on sea conditions. Dolphins are common on the crossing, and humpback whales in season.

What you will see snorkeling
The waters around the island are among the richest on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast. On a typical trip you can see:
- 🐢 sea turtles,
- 🦈 whitetip reef sharks (harmless),
- 🐡 rays and moray eels,
- 🐟 massive schools of jacks and tropical fish.
When to go
You can go all year round. The dry season (December to April) usually brings calmer seas and better visibility. In the green season, rain can cloud the water, but there are fewer people. If the sea is too rough, the operator may cancel for safety — you then get another date or a refund.
Tips
- Book a few days ahead: daily spots are limited.
- Bring reef-safe (mineral) sunscreen, a rash guard and a towel.
- Not a confident swimmer? Tell us and we will check with the boat what is possible.
- Prone to seasickness? Take something before you leave.
