A certified guide is mandatory

Since 2014 you cannot enter Corcovado without a guide certified by the ICT (Costa Rica Tourism Board). The rule applies to every entrance of the park, no exceptions.

It is a good thing: a certified guide knows the trails, keeps you safe in the forest and, above all, spots wildlife you would never find alone. Most carry a spotting scope so you can see animals up close.

Entrance fee and reservations

For foreign visitors the park fee is about $17 per person per day, on top of the guide. Spots are limited and must be reserved in advance — your guide handles it. In high season (January to April), book several weeks ahead.

Main ranger stations

  • Sirena: in the heart of the park, the best station for wildlife. Usually reached by boat very early in the morning. It is also the only one where you can stay overnight (very limited).
  • San Pedrillo: the easiest to reach from Drake Bay, perfect for a first day.
  • La Leona: on the south side, near Carate and Puerto Jiménez.
  • Los Patos and El Tigre: inland, for more adventurous hikers.

What wildlife can you see?

With a good guide, your chances are high to see:

  • 🐾 Baird’s tapir, the largest land mammal in Central America,
  • 🦜 scarlet macaws,
  • 🐒 all four monkey species: howler, capuchin, spider and squirrel monkeys,
  • 🦥 sloths, coatis, peccaries and anteaters.

When to go

The dry season, December to April, is the most comfortable for hiking. In the rainy season some trails get tough, and the park may close partly or fully in October for maintenance. We check that the park is open for your dates before booking.

Tips

  • Closed-toe hiking shoes (or rubber boots in the rainy season) and light long sleeves.
  • Plenty of water in a refillable bottle: single-use plastic bottles are not allowed.
  • Very early starts: that is when animals are most active.
  • Bug spray and sunscreen.
