December is one of the most popular months to visit Costa Rica: the rains ease off, the Northern Hemisphere humpback whales arrive and the country gets ready for the holidays. Here is what to expect on the South Pacific coast — and what to book before you fly.

Weather in December
December is the transition from the green season to the dry season. On the South Pacific coast (Uvita, Osa), showers become less frequent through the month and the dry season usually settles in from mid-December. Expect hot days (around 30°C / 86°F), sunny mornings and the occasional afternoon shower early in the month.
Whales are back
From December, humpback whales from the North Pacific (many from California) arrive to breed off Uvita and the Osa Peninsula. December to March is one of the two whale seasons — a great reason to add a whale watching tour to your trip.

Holiday crowds: book ahead
The two weeks around Christmas and New Year are the busiest of the year: Costa Rican families are on vacation too. Hotels, rental cars and tours fill up fast and prices go up.
- Corcovado: daily spots are limited — reserve weeks in advance.
- Caño Island: daily visitor cap — book a few days ahead minimum.
- Rental car: book as early as possible for late December.
What to pack
- Reef-safe sunscreen, hat and sunglasses.
- A light rain jacket for early-December showers.
- Hiking shoes for Corcovado and the waterfalls.
- Bug spray for the mangroves and the jungle.
